This Learning Object was created in Google Classrom as a piece of the adult learning program Veteran Mentor Program: Communication Skills Training.

Goals

The goal of the Mentoring Communication Skills Training is to prepare Veteran volunteers to become mentors to Veterans enrolled in Allegheny County’s Veteran Treatment Court. As the Veteran volunteers complete each training module, they will gain knowledge and skills to support their role as a Veteran mentor to Veterans enrolled in Allegheny County’s Veteran Treatment Court.

Objectives

The objective of this training is to teach new mentors the communication skills necessary for mentors to be able to conduct effective mentoring sessions. This objective will be achieved by mentors:

  • Demonstrating effective listening skills

  • Demonstrating empathy through paraphrasing

  • Using effective questioning techniques

The modules created for this training focus on Mentor Communication Skills and include the following modules:

  1. Section 1: Welcome

  2. Section 2: Module 1 - What Is a Mentor?

  3. Section 3: Module 2 - Active Listening Skills

  4. Section 4: Module 3 - Empathy Through Paraphrasing

  5. Section 5: Module 4 - Questioning Techniques

  6. Section 6: Module 5 - Wrapping Things Up

  7. Section 7: Final Assessment
